Since attending the Slingababy consultancy course in May this year, I have been working on this special project. During the course we explored ways that we can work to make the babywearing world more inclusive to the diverse population of parents and carers.
Snow Geese has been carefully designed to have specific tactile qualities that make the different sections of the wrap recognisable by touch. Also the high contrast and definition between the three sections (top, middle and bottom) make it very useful for teaching with. There are a total of 4 middle-markers sewn in the wrap; two in the usual places, sewn into the seam on the top and bottom rails, and two sewn around the hem at the same point so they can be easily be felt when running your fingers down the rail.
I set to work on this design to make a wrap that would make it easier for visually impaired parents to work with, and learn to use a woven wrap. I consulted with a visually impaired parent who already uses wraps throughout the design process to make sure the elements of the design functioned in the way I desired. What I have found though, is that these particular qualities make it especially helpful for everyone teaching or learning! For this reason I am happy to say this will be our official teaching wrap. We will aim to keep it in-stock at all times, but as we are a small company we needed to start out smaller on this initial run. If it sells out quickly during Thursday's release we will open a pre-order with those wraps expected to be ready to post by January.
The design is geese flying in a V on their way south for winter over a boulevard of bare wintery trees. The wearer can pick if they prefer the look of the white sky with grey canadian geese and dark siluetted trees or a moody grey sky with white snow geese flying over a frosty forest.
The colourway of two-tone grey marl weft on ecru warp has been specifically chosen to make it easy to repeat weave in order to restock quickly. For now we will only be reweaving this colourway but perhaps in the future we will add others.
The blend is easy care 100% Cotton and our usual 267gsm. The majority of the wrap is in our Plush weave, with about one quarter of the bottom section in a gradient of twill weaves chosen for their specific tactile qualities. Also making great grip for holding a seat in place!
The prices will be our usual Cotton prices (£79-£136, RS-8) but we will offer a special discount for Sling Libraries and Consultants. If you are a Visually impaired parent or know of someone who would benefit from this wrap please do get in touch with us as we would love to hear from you.
Like a sandy bay hugs the sea, our woven wraps and slings are designed for you to carry your baby safely and snugly. We work with our local weavers in Yorkshire, England to create soft and strong natural fabrics perfect for baby-wearing.
As a family of artists it is our vision to create beautiful artworks and stylish patterns on our wraps. We design each fabric so the images, flow and space in each pattern take on a completed form when wrapped around you and your baby.
Each wrap is carefully sewn by Juliette who is a very experienced seamstress and babywearer. We also design and sell accessories, such as hats and cowls in the same material to match your slings to wear whilst you're out showing your baby the world.
